CAT board to revoke roaming license from DPC

A board of directors at Cat Telecom Plc (CAT), a state-run telecom company whose operates international call service, agreed to revoke a roaming license from Digital Phone Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of Advance Info Service Plc or AIS (ADVANC)—a mobile operator linked with fugitive PM Thaksin Shinawatra, following a criminal court’s orders that an amendment to the license may posts disadvantages to the company.

An insider who’s familiar with the matter reported that the board was assigned to launch probe on the amendment processes to the license, which it said benefits to AIS more than to CAT.

A board member said DPC has failed to compile with the license’s terms in expanding service station coverage. Instead, it enjoys a joint-roaming network privileges obtaining from the license.

“DPC has put its base-station expansion plan on hold in fear that it may compete directly with its mother company AIS,” he commented.

An accusation was in connection of the Administrative Supreme Court’s rule to seized almost 60 percent of frozen fortune of Mr. Thaksin.

A news source commented that, according to the original license, CAT Telecom would earn at least a total of 3.6 billion baht from the license.

It would earn at least 5.4 billion baht from, or 1.8 billion baht more, from the amendment.
