Thailand mulls supporting Dawei seaport project as export hub

The Thai government is thinking about supporting the deep seaport construction project in Dawei City, Myanmar (Burma) as the region’s next sea-transportation hub, according to Deputy Minister at the Office of Prime Minister Putthipong Punnagun.

He said the country will be benefitted from the project for both importing and exporting activities.

The cabinet meeting presided by Prime Minister Abisit Vejachiva on Monday has assigned the Foreign Department to liaise with the Myanmar government about the Thai government support of the project.

Mr. Putthipong said the Thai government will help constructed a 190-kilometer highway from the Thai border to the seaport.

“This is an important investment,” Mr. Putthipong told reporters. “Upon completion of the project, we can establish commercial links between the east and the west coasts.”

The Dawei seaport project is funded by the Chinese government. It is expected to be new sea-transportation portal between China and the West.
